BALDWIN, Pa. (KDKA) — Police said a series of brush fires in the South Hills on Tuesday were not intentionally set like first believed.
Baldwin police said on Wednesday they can confirm the fires were accidental.
Police said the investigation indicates a diesel particulate filter, or a DPF, caused the fires. Diesel engines use a DPF system that will occasionally regenerate, causing extreme heat in the exhaust system and possibly igniting dry vegetation along roadways under the right atmospheric conditions, police said.
Baldwin police pointed out that the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Wednesday because low relative humidity, gusty wind and warm temperatures are creating a high risk for the spread of wildfires. Police said those conditions were present Tuesday too.
Police also thanked residents who provided surveillance video that helped with the investigation and said they believe there are no risks to the community.
