Caterpillar's two new industrial diesel power units are suited for construction, material-handling and other off-highway applications in the 74 to 134 hp range, while meeting emissions standards of higher regulated markets, including EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, China Non-road IV, Korea Stage V and Japan 2014.

The Cat C2.8 and Cat C3.6 IPUs come complete with factory-installed ECM sensors, radiators, cooling packs, filtration, control systems and aftertreatment hardware. This integrated design enables OEMs with restricted engineering resources to shorten their design and assembly timelines, said Steve Ferguson, senior vice president Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems.

"These new drop-in packages offer design flexibility, power density, emissions compliance and field-proven durability in an integrated package that can help off-highway manufacturers accelerate their speed to market," he stated.

The new compact units feature a common rail, direct injection design with a turbocharged C2.8 or turbocharged aftercooled C3.6 air system. The C2.8 is rated 74 hp, has a bore x stroke dimensions of 3.54 in. x 4.33 in. and delivers 221 lb. ft. maximum torque at 1600 rpm. The C3.6 is rated 134 hp, has a bore x stroke of 3.85 in. x 4.72 in. and generates 406 lb. ft. max torque at 1500 rpm. Both incorporate an on-engine diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), with the Cat C3.6 also equuipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

The integrated ECM, aftertreatment sensors and fuel filter are all validated to operate in harsh environments. A new wiring harness has been developed to allow for a simple hookup to machine wiring. In addition, an engine control panel option for engine monitoring and speed control is available to facilitate fast installation.

For operations in challenging work conditions, the IPUs are available with heavy-duty cooling packs incorporating a pusher fan and erosion screen, as well as heavy-duty fuel filters with increased dirt-holding capacities.

The IPUs can utilize renewable liquid fuels such as 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and are equipped with Cat Digital Services for remote monitoring.
