One BMW XM And Four X7 M60i Need To Have Their Exhausts Fixed

BMW says the connection between the exhaust and cats

BMW says the connection between the exhaust and cats on the X7 M60i and XM could be faulty

The owners of four BMW X7 M60i models and a single BMW XM will soon have to take their vehicles into a dealership after it was revealed they are embroiled in a recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) latest recall campaign notes that the connection between the exhaust system and the catalytic converter on select X7 and XM models may not have been made to specifications. The result? It is possible that one or more of the fasteners may not have been torqued to the appropriate value, which could lead to a loose connection.

BMW notes that the connection could continue to loosen depending on the road and environmental factors and in rare cases, the issue could lead to a thermal event that increases the risk of a crash.

The issue first came across BMW's radar on March 14, 2023 when it found an improperly torqued connection between the exhaust and the catalytic converter of an X7 at one of its assembly plants. Fortunately, the automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

As mentioned, four examples of the 2023 X7 M60i are included in the recall, all of which were made between March 4, 2023 and March 11, 2023. As for the single 2023 XM that needs repairs, it was manufactured on March 10, 2023.

BMW informed its dealers of the recall on April 26, 2023 and will start to notify owners from June 16. It will resolve the issue by replacing the gasket between the exhaust system and the catalytic converter and will ensure that the fasteners are adequately torqued.
